Fishing the last week has been hot and cold (but mostly hot). One day of “off” fishing will be followed by a couple of hot fishing!
The weather has been just as unpredictable changing from hot sunshine and calm winds to sunshine and high winds and we even had a blow through of SE winds accompanied by rain that we would usually only see in the winter months with winds gusting 56 kn at Solander. Crazy!
However, back to the good stuff! Limits of chinook salmon are still the norm (imagine that) and we had the season’s biggest halibut (within the size of regulations) and chinook both come in on the same day. Congrats to Jack who just missed the tyee mark with a 29 lb spring and to Mitch who brought in a super fat halibut that just squeaked in at 133 cm but weighed 82 lbs.
Trips out to the 50 edge continue to produce limits of salmon and bottom fish while some of the larger salmon have been found in closer to shore at places like Thornton Islands and Lookout. One of our air carriers mentioned that the fish loads out of Kyuquot have been almost triple that from other areas! The Sound is certainly keeping it’s reputation alive!
Anchovies and spoons seem to be the number one choice of the chinooks trolled from 60 to 85 ft in close to shore and at 130 – 165 ft out on the highway.
The warm water that can bring tuna with it is still holding a few hundred miles away but it has been slowly creeping closer so it looks like we might have a shot at ’em in a couple of weeks. Standby for updates on these fishing reports and watch our Facebook page for more frequent news!
Our customers have been raving about the lodge this year and it’s already starting to look like it might be tough to find space for next year! Gotta love it! Thanks to all who have joined us so far and we are looking forward to seeing our many friends that are still to come!
If you’re still interested in this season, there are less than 10 spots available for the rest of the year so give us a call or drop me an email. We’d love to chat fishing with you.
Until next week…….Tight Lines!
