DFO Announces 2018 Chinook Limits

DFO ANNOUNCES 2018 CHINOOK LIMITS

Capture.PNG

There are many challenges facing some populations of chinook salmon along the whole Pacific Coast and you may have heard that the initiatives of DFO in regard to South Coast Resident Killer Whales could impact limits of chinook this summer.  After way too much dragging of their feet, DFO has finally announced the chinook limits for the coast of BC.  While some areas  have seen some drastic changes, we are pleased to announce that Kyuquot Sound, both inshore and offshore, will remain untouched by these decisions!  Areas 26 and 126 will remain at 2 chinook/day and 4 chinook in possession.  Some areas further north have had their limits cut in half or even gone to non retention in order to protect Nass and Skeena River chinook and the Straight of Georgia and southern Vancouver Island have been hit hard as part of an initiative to provide more prey for Killer Whales.  The time has never been better to visit us at Walters Cove Resort!

OUR CHINOOK LIMITS HAVEN'T CHANGED

2 PER DAY AND A TOTAL OF 4 IN POSSESSION (TAKE HOME)

This proves the importance of the DNA sampling that has been taking place in Kyuquot for the past few years as we were able to prove that chinook travelling through our waters are not part of the endangered populations nor make up any considerable numbers of the prime feeding population of chinook for the endangered species of Killer Whales.  Thanks to all who participated in providing samples  and for all who save hatchery heads and turned them into DFO for analysis!

You can go to this link: http://notices.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fns-sap/index-eng.cfm?pg=view_notice&DOC_ID=208486&ID=all to view the Fisheries Notice that was released yesterday explaining the areas affected by these management measures.  To view the regulations in full (and for all areas) visit the link below.  Note that we are located and fish in Areas 26 and 126:

It is unfortunate that DFO was swayed by political pressure and mainstream media to put these management measured into effect rather than base their decision on science based facts, recommendations and economic impact.  For the full perspective of the Sportfishing community please visit this link of a news release put out by the Sport Fishing Institute of BC:
